House Republican Leader Responds to Governor’s Special Legislative Session Announcement

State Agency Press Release – From the Office of House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong

Santa Fe, NM — Following Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s announcement of a special legislative session beginning October 1, House Republicans are calling on the Governor and Democrat leadership to finally address the real emergencies facing New Mexicans.

House Republicans believe this special session must focus on:

● Fixing healthcare at its root by reforming malpractice laws and bringing more providers to New Mexico

● Protecting children in state custody by holding CYFD accountable for repeated failures

● Restoring public safety through juvenile justice reform and stronger consequences for repeat offenders

In response to today’s announcement, House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong (R-Magdalena) has issued the following statement:

“We cannot continue to ignore the root causes of New Mexico’s healthcare crisis. Our hospitals are closing, our doctors are leaving, and New Mexicans are struggling to access care because of destructive malpractice laws written by the progressive majority. Unless these laws are fixed, health care in New Mexico will not improve.

At the same time, we are witnessing children dying in state custody through CYFD failures and an alarming rise in violent juvenile crime. These are real emergencies. Yet once again, the Governor has allowed the progressive wing of her party to bully her into prioritizing their political agenda instead of tackling the crises that matter to New Mexico families.

House Republicans have already put forward serious solutions on healthcare reform, juvenile justice, and CYFD accountability. The Democrats have blocked them at every turn to protect trial lawyers and special interests. New Mexicans deserve a special session that takes these issues seriously — not another round of political theater dictated by the 4th floor of the Roundhouse.”
