For over a hundred years, New Mexico has created state government budgets affecting the health, safety and prosperity of its residents.
However, most decisions about priorities, and the amount of spending on services impacting the public, are made behind closed doors by a handful of people.
It’s a budget system that needs to change.
The Candle is working with New Mexicans who are traditionally left out of the budget process to showcase their voices in the creation of a budget alternative – offering spending levels which reflect their concerns in providing effective, responsive, just, and transparent governance.
